(Shillington: History of Africa -
The Islam coming from the North and Christianity coming from the southern coast.
Both religions did not fully permeate Burkina Faso which is far from both ends of the continent.

(Shillington: History of Africa)
The West African states before the colonization. The Mossi is still the largest ethnic group in Burkina Faso.

(Ieuan Ll. Griffiths, 1994: The Atlas of African Affairs, second edition, Routledge)
Drought-prone areas in the Sahel
The belt with the precipitation between 100 and 600 mm may be classified as the Sahel.
However, the drought-prone area is a belt in a bit south along the 600 mm line.

This is not a usual record of travel. This record is based on my official trip associated with an experimental project of the Japanese Ministry of the Environment for construction of an underground dam in a village called Naré in approximately two and a half hours from Ouagadougou to the North-East. During my stay, I visited other places in the North-East of the country in order to learn the situation of the region. Also, photos of Ouagadougou, Kaya, Tanpore, Nare and Tougouli were taken not on one occasion but in my several visits. (The information of a technical summary of the project is available in Japanese, French and English at the web site of the Ministry of the Environment of Japan.)
Because of the official character of the trip, a four-wheel drive vehicle (Pajero) was employed with a driver as well as a interpreter in English, French and Moré (local language of the Mossi). In view of the road situation and public transportation, it is difficult to make a similar trip in the country. Even the local driver suffered from the unclear "national highway" between Gorom-Gorom and Aribinda, in which the road was actually a cart trail in croplands. In this section, the deep sand was also a problem even for the four-wheel drive vehicle.
Ouagadougou, capital
Officially the city of Ouagadougou has almost one million population. However, my impression was that it was a small city. Despite that impression, we could enjoy various dishes from different countries, including local, Senegalese, Ghanaian, Vietnamese, etc.
We could see Mr. Takahashi, Representative of the Greening the Sahel, an aid NGO of Japan, and its staff member Mr. Seto who were in research to identify a new project site in Burkina Faso,. which the village of Takabangou near the border to Niger became later. We happened to meet Mr. Komatsu who happened to have checked in to the same hotel as Mr. Takahashi. Mr. Komatsu had just came from Ghana on a rough road. His photos are full of his love of the people living in different parts on the Earth. This fortunate meeting led to Mr. Komatsu's provision of his photos for the Greening the Sahel's calendar.
Kaya, Tangpore, Nare, Tougouli 「
As a part of the Sudan which is next to the Sahel to the south, this area is dry. However, the precipitation is not sufficient for stable agricultural production; nor is the aridity sufficient for pastoralism. Characterized by significant fluctuation of its precipitation in terms of year, time and place, the area is quite prone to drought.
This is the first town in the Sahel when we go northeast. A mosque made of mud which is said to be constructed by Malians informs us that we are now in the arid Sahel.
Dori, Gorom-Gorom
The life here is sophisticated, utilizing old sand dunes for cultivation of millet and the low and wet areas between the old sand dunes as reservoirs and woodlands.
Campement Hotelier in Gorom-Gorom has cottages and a restaurant along the mud walls surrounding acacia shades and a tea shop in the center. The cottages are made of mud, even the beds with the only exception of the floor of the shower room. This is a splendid hotel fully utilizing the characteristics of the arid area.
Gorom-Gorom to Ouahigouya
Rural areas in the Sahel. People fully utilize the characteristics of the Nature of this area with water resources in the low areas between old sand dunes. However, bare grounds with no vegetation and bare rocks are seen in many places.
Located in about fifteen kilometers from Ouagadougou, the village has developed vegetable production for consumption in Ouagadougou with assistance from a local NGO funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The assistance includes construction of a deep well and education for the villagers on calculation and literacy which are essential for commercial activities for the vegetables. I appreciate the generous offer of the UNDP Burkina Faso Office to take me tro the village. However, the villagers themselves dug wells and, with water from the wells, they produce vegetables by themselves.

(A map showing the places I visited and some names of the places and facilities will be added in due course.
