• Lonely Planet: やはり、いつものLonely Planetは、小さな村までカバーしていて、役立ちました。
• Berlitz: Latin-American Spanish Phrase Book & Dictionary: スペイン語ができないので、役に立ちました。スペイン語圏を旅行していると、徐々にスペイン語になじんでくるのですが、しかし、スペイン語に対する抵抗感が大きく薄れたのは、チリ最南の町であるプンタ・アレーナスの港で「Bienvenido」という看板を見た時でした。つまり、今ではほとんど忘れてしまっているとはいえ、四半世紀前にフランス語を習ったことがあり、出張でパリに年に2回行っていた時期もあった私は、この言葉が、フランス語の「bien venue」(ようこそ)とよく似ていることに気付いたのでした。習ったことのある言語に似ている言語ならなんとかなるという気持になりました。なお、プンタアレーナスに来て初めて、「LL」の音が、チリでは、英語の「Y」とほぼ同じ音であるのに対し、アルゼンチンでは英語の「illusion」などにある「j」の弱いほうの音であることを知りました。チリから国境を越えてアルゼンチンに入ってすぐ、「Rio Gallecos」という「LL」を含む町があり、その「LL」が、チリとアルゼンチンとで全く違っていることに気付いたからでした。

注意点 Caution

• 卓越する西風がアンデスの山々に当たるこの地域は、年間を通じて雨が多く、天候が良いのは12月から1月にかけてのわずかの期間であるとのことです。クカオのマルセーラからは、真冬に来たら静かでいいと言われましたが、お天気は毎日雨とのことでした。
• プンタ・アレーナス周辺は人口も希薄で、公共交通機関もありません。そのため、パッケージツアーに入らない限りは、レンタカーで回ることになるかと思います。そのレンタカーの場合も、プンタ・アレーナスとプエルト・ナターレス以外にはガソリンスタンドがないといってよい状態のため、ガス欠には十分に注意して下さい。また、道路は、プンタアレーナス付近以外、舗装がされていないため、対向車が跳ね飛ばす石で車を傷めることが多いので、対向車が来たら、自分の車のスピードによる衝撃を避けるため、必ず減速して下さい。深い砂利道の運転にも注意が必要です。
• 公共交通機関がないため、地元の人も、ヒッチハイクが普通です。私も、トレス・デル・パイネからの帰路に母子を乗せました。旅行者がヒッチハイクする場合の安全性他の課題については、旅行ガイドによる最新の情報等も参考にしつつ、判断して下さい。

• Due to the prevailing westerly wind hitting the Andean Mountains, this area is rainy almost all year round. Only during the short period from December to Jaunuary, the area has good weather.
• Human population is scarce in the Punta Arenas area. Because of this, no public transportation has developed there. Therefore visitors should rent a car unless they join an organized tour.
• No gas station is expected elsewhere than in Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales. Be careful of the fuel of your vehicle.
• Most roads are not paved. Either substantially reduce the speed of your car or stop when another vehicle is approaching you. Otherwise, stones hit by the other car may break your car. Deep gravel may also be a problem in driving a car.
• Hitching is common among local people because they lack public transport. However, whether you hitch or not depends on various conditions and varies from time to time. Careful research of risks is important.
