これらの場所に行った事情

前々年9月に豆満江(中国名: 図們江)開発に絡んだ国連開発計画(UNDP)の仕事で図們他に行くことになっていたのを中止せざるを得なかったので、機会があったら行ってみたいと思っていたところ、北京往復15,400円という超格安の航空券を見つけたのでした。前後の日程の条件の範囲内でできるだけ行きたいところに行くとなると、帰りの便が満席だったため、24,000円の航空券に変えて、行ったのでした。

図們は、単にUNDPの仕事で行けなかっただけでなく、「脱北者」が凍った川を渡って逃げてくる場所という、北東アジア地域の歴史と政治の矛盾から来る人権問題の地でもあります。ちょうど数ヶ月前、3組の方々が拉致から長年の苦難を経て帰国したこともあり、この国境を見てみたいとも強く思いました。

加えて、中国東北地方は、日本人が、「満州帝国」をでっち上げ、地元の人たちの生活を無視して「入植」し、とても表現しきれない苦難を地元の人たちに強い、そして敗戦後には、入植するなどした日本人が大変な苦難を経験した場所でもあります。私の伯父の一人も、大学卒業後に三井物産に入り、早速瀋陽に勤務し、そしてそこで新婚生活を送り、やがて1945年4月生まれの長男を抱えてやっとのことで帰国したという身近な事実もあります。そいういう歴史的事実を伝える場所を見ておきたいと思いました。加えて、その伯父も、88歳になって癌になり、それが転移して、結局、行ってみたいと長く思っていたその地に行けないままになる可能性が高まってもいたので、写真でも撮ってきて、見せたいとも思ったのでした。

役立った図書等

• 地球の歩き方: 大連と中国東北地方(Lonely Planetのほうが正確で詳しい地域が多いのですが、さすがに日本と縁の多い地域は、地球の歩き方も有用です。)
• Lonely Planet: China (御承知のとおり、amazon.co.jpから買うのが安くて、かつ、出版元から直接買うのと同様に早い(日本に在庫があればオーストラリアの出版元から送ってもらうよりも早い。)。)
• 中国鉄道出版社: 全国鉄路旅客列車時刻表(洋書店でも売っていますが、中国書籍専門店で買う方がかなり安いです。元々が安いものなので、節約できる金額は知れていますが。なお、日本国内で買っても1,000円程度(中国書籍専門店だと600円)なので、中国国内ではどこに行けば必ず手に入るかを承知していない限り、日本国内で購入することをお勧めします。)
• 小学館: 井上ひさしの大連: 写真と地図で見る満州(大連を中心にしつつも、中国東北地方全体についての基礎知識及び満鉄と縁の深かった都市等をカバーしています。副題の通り、図や写真が多く、情報が大変具体的かつ有用です。)1,575円
• 復刻版陸軍測地部「奉天」地図(上記井上ひさしの本にも奉天地図が出ていますが、こちらは縮尺も大きくかつ大変詳しいものです。東京・神田神保町の中国書専門店「内山書店」で入手しました。)

厳冬期の服装

氷点下20度位が普通の地域なので、日本の標高の高いスキー場の気温を想定し、羽毛の上着、スキーのオーバーズボン等で防御しました。このくらいが必要です。なお、ホテル内や列車内は暖かくて快適です。

Points of interest

Historical sites and buildings of the periods when major military powers, particularly Emperial Japan, occupied and exploited the area. Also, the frozen border river between China and North Korea which many North Korean refugees cross.

Why I visited these places

In September in the previous year, I had been supposed to visit Tumen and its vicinity for a project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) but had to cancel it. But because I was well prepared for the visit, I wanted to visit the area if I had such a chance. Then very fortunately, I found a return ticket to Beijing at JY15,400 only. In order to see as much as I could on condition that I could do all that I had to do before and after the trip, I chose a JY24,000 ticket instead of the JY15,400 one.

For me, Tumen is not only the place that I had not been able to visit for the UNDP project but also a place of concern because it is a place of human rights and human dignity closely associated with the history and political difficulties in Northeast Asia. Three groups of Japanese citizens who had very long suffered from extreme difficulties after abduction had come back to Japan a few months before. Therefore I wanted to see this border.

In addition, Northeast China is the place where Japanese established the puppet empire of Manchuria and forced such difficulties, including the colonization by Japanese to the places on which local people's life depended, that are hard to describe but also where the Japense colonizers in turn seriously suffered after the War. Actually one of my uncles joined Mitsui Co. after his graduation from university and sent to Shenyang and later got married there. But the couple had to fled back to Japan in serious difficulties with their first son who had been born in April 1945. And that uncle suffered from cancer that had already affected his back bones at the age of 88 and thus was unlikely to be able to visit the city, which he had long wanted. Therefore I wanted to take photoes of the city to show him.
