初めて行ったインド。釈迦が初めて説教をしたとされる仏教遺跡のサールナートの再整備計画を米国政府が作るというプロジェクトに急に参加することになった。整備されれば日本人が大勢来るのだから日本人も参加してはどうかとの誘いがあったということで、日本人2人のうちの1人として参加した。

デリーに着いてみると、アメリカの大学の先生が大学院生たちを連れて実習を行うような形だった。デザインがとてもうまい学生たちで、直ちにローマ字をヒンディー文字風に加工したものを入れながら、再整備案の平面図をきれいに描いていた。しかし、地域の手工業等を取り入れる計画といった面には疎かった。

若く、海外が初めての学生たちは、古い、アンバサダーというインドの国民車のタクシーに喜ぶなど、新鮮な感動を素直に表現していて、楽しい滞在だった。まだ若かった浅野哲哉さんが「絵ときガイドインド」という、大変優れた案内書をJTBから出していて、これは、予習にとても役立った。そして、何よりも、舌に金属の串を刺して苦行して歩く人の姿など、本当にそんなことがあるのかというようなことが、実際に現地で見られ、そういったことを絵を中心にたくさん描いたこの本に感激した*。学生たちも、この本の絵を見て、自分たちが目の当たりにしているインドの人々の生活が、その本の通りであることに感激していた。

3週間半ほど1か所に滞在するという形のこの出張で、サールナートとヴァラナシーを中心とするインドの普通の生活や社会の成り立ちをよく理解することができた。

My first visit to India. In a haste, I had been asked to join the study team of the US Government for re-development of the Buddhism site of Sarnath where Buddha did a sermon for the first time. I was one of the two Japanese who had joined the team as invited by the US because there would be many Japanese tourists once the site had been re-developed.

As I arrived in Delhi, I learned that it was virtually a practice work of graduate students led by their professor. Talented in the designing, the students were not used to incorporating into plans the cottage industries and other local social and economic conditions.

In their visit to a foreign state for the first time, the students were quite innocent in expressing their surprise and other emotions in riding on an Ambassador taxi which was special to India, and many other experiences. I was happy to stay with such young people. I had bought a small book, Illustrated India (Etoki Guide India) illustrated by Mr. ASANO Tetsuya, who was young that time, and published by JTB. This book was quite useful in my learning about India before the trip. But I was much more impressed with the fact that what I had seen in the book were actually going on in front of me, such as a person walking in ascetic practices with a stainless steel skewer through his toungue. The students were also impressed by the consistency of the illustrations in the book with what they saw in reality.

Staying almost for three and a half weeks in one place, I could well understand the citizens' life and social foundations of India in Sarnath and Varanasi.
