Objetives of the trip

I took students to Madagascar as a General Education class: The Environment and Development in Developing Countries in Reality. Reading books, students tend to imagine that people in developing countrties suffer from harsh daily life. However, in reality, many live a happy daily life. But at the same time, statistical data tell us that various problems face those people. I wanted students to understand such relaity. This is why I had planned this class.

On the way back to Japan, we stopped in Bangkok for two days so that stundents would be exposed to the current situation and responses of the Government in the more industrialized and urbanized developing country and also would learn what the United Naiton Environment Programme ((UNEP) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific was doing.

Lonely Planet was the primary information source for the trip again. The contents of Chikyu no Arukikata were too old and limited, although this guide book had some information that Lonely Planed did not.

Caution

In the lower areas of Madagascar is found malaria. There is also a small risk in Antananarivo in the highland capital. Attention should be paid to parasites, too. Cysticercosis causes serious problems especially in the brain. Pork may have cysticercosis in case it is not thouroughly cooked. Certain vegetables such as lettuce that may not be well washed due to their forms as well as certain fruits such as strawberry that are too delicate to wash should be avoided. Traffic accidents are also a problem due to the virtual priority to vehicles, quite underdeveloped roads, deteriorated vehicles, etc.. Robberies are rampant in certain districts in Antananrivo. Visitors do not have to excessively worry but should take sufficient preventive measures in reference to the information given in right sources such as the following web sites. Visitors should also be careful about the temperature in the highlands, including Antananarivo, which is much lower than that they imagine:
