• 白い壁の家々が並ぶ地中海側の世界。
• これに対し、その土地の土の色そのままの家々の内陸の世界。

• 見知らぬ人に案内をしよう、援助をしようと、遠慮なく申し出が続く。しかし、お金のある者は、そういった援助に対し、お金を払うことが義務である。そいういった自称「ガイド」等に対してうまく対処できるか試される国でもある。

• 自称「ガイド」への対応 How to cope with "guides"
  (1)状況一般 General information
  随分良くなったとは聞くものの、まだかなりしつこいところがある。エルフードは最悪で、ガイドの雨あられ。私の車についてバイクでどこまでも追いかけてくる「ガイド」もいた。ムハミッドでもバイクで追いかけてくる「ガイド」を含め、悩まされ、昼食の機会を逃した。テルウェトでも、ガイドから逃げ回り、昼食の機会を逃した。
  他方、悪名高かったタンジェではほとんどいなかった。メクネスでも悩まされることがなかった。
  フェズでは少数。しかし、子供が「英語の練習をさせて下さい。」と勝手にまとわりつき、結局お金を要求され、お金を渡して立ち去ってもらわざるを得なかった。タンジェでは、老人が、「衛生的でおいしいレストランを紹介する。」と勝手についてきて、結局高いレストランに入れらることになった。そして、私のテーブルに着席して立ち去らず、結局、お金を払って立ち去ってもらった。マラケシュでも「ガイド」すると近づく人はごく少数。しかし、「150DHできれいな宿がある。」と宿に連れて行かれ、その後3人から「案内料」を強く求められ、結局お金を渡して立ち去ってもらった(その宿は、実際には200DHだった。)。
  I hear that the situation has much improved. However, there are still such places where touts are persistent. Particulary bad was Erfoud. I was bothered uninterrupted "guide" touts. There was even a "guide" who followed me for a long distance in narrow streets, which resulted in my missing a luch. Also in Telouet, I missed lunch in escaping from touts.
  On the other hand, there was almost no touts in notorious Tangier. I was not bothered in Mekness.
  The number was few in Fez. However, a child followed me, saying that he wanted to learn English in speaking with me. But at last he requested money for his "service" and, in order to have him go, I had to pay. In Tangier, an old man followed me saying that he would introduce me to "a clean and good restaurant". I was forced to stop in a restaurant, which I found expensive, or at least in comparison to the quality of the dishes. Only when I gave money to him he left my table. There were not so many "guides" in Marrakech. However, a man took me to a hotel, saying that he knew a clean and good hotel at DH 150 only. But he and two others requested money for their "service" and never left me until I paid. And the rate at the hotel was actually DH 200.
  
  (2)どう対応すべきか How to cope with "guides"
  このように、「ガイド」とは言い難い人たちからの「案内料」の要求が執拗に行われる。しかも、これらの人たちは、「ガイド」を必要としない場所で「案内」を買って出て、しかも先へ先へと急がせるので、１人で歩く場合に見られるものも見られない。観光客の多い町では、人通りの多い商店街などが観光対象であり、基本的に人の流れについていけばよく、ガイド無しでも迷うことはないと同時に、仮に迷っても、壁で囲われた町なので、いずれ目標になるものを見つけることができる。特に、すり鉢状の地形のフェズでは、ほとんど迷う余地はない。また、うまく迷うことができれば、そのことこそは、メディナのおもしろさでもあるはず。従って、基本的に、子供や老人を含め、理由をつけて言い寄って来る人たちに対しては、ついてくることを明確に拒むことが肝要。そういう人たちは、少しでも「案内をした。」と言い張る事情ができれば、お金を受け取るまで立ち去らない。
  但し、建物の由緒などについてきちんとした解説を受けたければ、ガイドを雇うことに意味がある。しかし、そのような場合、ガイドの資格を持った人を雇うべきであり、素人を雇うことは全く勧められない。砂丘を見に行くなどの場合は、安全の確保のためガイドを雇うことが考えられるが、通常は、ホテルなど、きちんとしたところでツアーに参加する形か、またはホテル専属のガイドを雇うのがよいかと思う。
  As such, requests for money for their "services" by those who can hardly be called "guides" are rampant and persistent in many parts of tourist destinations in Morocco. In many cases, they offer "guide services" at such places where there is no need for such services. In addition, because they hasten us to go further, we cannot see what we want to. In most medinas, the streets that attract tourists are the main shopping streets where just following people leads us to places where we should reach. Even if we have been lost, we reach some gate on the city wall which we can at last idenfity because the medina is surrounded by walls. Especially in Fez where the medina is formed in a valley, we are rarely lost. Also, losig way can be a fun in a medina. Therefore it is essential to firmly say "no" to those who offer "guide services", including old people and children. Once they have done something that they can insist was a service, they never leave us unless they receive money.
  Of course, if you want right explantions of the history, culture, etc. then guide services will be justified. However, a trained and registered guides should be employed in such a case. For siple guide of trails in desert land, a non-registered guide may suffice. Otherwise, you should join a group tour organized by professional operators or emply a right guide stationed at hotels.
  
• モロッコの安宿に泊まるための心づもり How to prepare yourself to stay at budget hotels
  ・ 安宿には、せっけん、タオル、トイレ紙がないことが多いので、持参する必要がある。
  ・ 地中海岸及びアトラス山地等のやや標高の高いところではお湯の出るシャワーが欲しいが、内陸で標高の低いところでは、冬以外は暑いので、水のシャワーのほうが気持ちよく、温水シャワーの必要性はほとんどない(人にもよるが。)。
  ・ 土ぼこりの多いモロッコでは、床一面じゅうたん敷のところは掃除が行き届きにくく、タイルのところだときれいな傾向がある。
  ・ モロッコは、日中は暑いところが多いためか、日暮頃になってから買い物などでにぎわう傾向が強くなっている。おそらくそれと関係して、特に宿は朝食の時間の遅い傾向が強く、早いところでも7時、多くのところでは7時半、遅いところでは8時半からだった。早めに出発したい場合は、簡単な朝食を自分で用意しておくのも一案。町であれば、出勤途中に飲み物とパン程度の簡単な朝食を済ませる人が多いので、早い時間から宿の外のそういう人向けの場所で朝食をとることが可能。
  - Bring, or buy locally, soap, towel and toilet paper with you because many budget hotels do not have such things in their rooms.
  - You may want hot water in the Mediterranean coasts and places in high altitude as in the Atlas Mountains. Except in winter, you may not need hot water in the interior of the country, particularly where the altitude is low. In such places that may be characterized by heat, cold water may be rather comfortable, although it depends on individual persons' preferences.
  - Because the country is mostly dusty, carpetted floor may not suitable as cleaning carpets may not be easy. Usually tiled floors can be easily kept clean.
  - Many Moroccans go out for shopping in the evening because it is hot during day time. Probably in close association with this, breakfast time at hotels tends to be late - at the earliest from 7:00 but usually from 7:30 or even from 8:30 at some hotels. Therefore if you want to start early, you should buy something to eat for breakfast on the previous day. It is also a good idea to take a simple breakfast at small cafes where many locals take simple breakfasts on the way to their offices or schools.
  
• 移動の途中などの食事 Lunch on the way
  ・ ドライブインの食事は、一般に内容が悪く、かつ高い。内容が良くて、かつ高くなかったのは、ティシュカ峠(マラケシュ・ワルザザート間)の土産物屋の2階のレストランだけだった。デザートまでつき、愛想もよかった。但し、量は少なかった。
  ・ 代わりの方法として勧められるのは、パンに具をはさんでサンドイッチにしてくれるお店があれば、そこで用意していく方法。ドライブインだと60DHも取ったりするのに、そういうサンドイッチは、何種類かの具をはさんでもらって、6DHぐらい。
  ・ 移動の途中とは限らないが、ドライブインとは対照的に、ホテルのレストランは高いことはなく、内容は良いことが多く、対費用効果が高いと感じた。特に、2つ星程度のレストランではその傾向が強い。
  - Meals at roadside restaurants are usually expensive or not good in terms of cost-effectivenss. The only exception during my trip was the restaurant on the second floor of a souvenir shop at the Tichka Pass between Ouarzazat and Marrakech. Their set menu came with deserts. They were friendly and service was good, although the amount was a bit small.
  - One alternative is to order a sandwitch at a shop which you may find in town. While a lunch at a roadside restaurant may cost DH 60, a sandwitch with a few contents at such a shop may costs only DH 6 or so.
  - In contrast to roadside restaurants, restaurants in hotels, particularly those in hotels with two stars or so, were cost-effective.
  
• 定価販売の土産物屋 Souvenir shops at fixed prices
  買い物や値切りを楽しむことを目的としない旅行者にとって、値切り交渉は、煩わしいとともに、買いたいものがあっても品物をゆっくり選んでいる時間がなくなり、また、交渉に時間がかかるために本来の観光などの時間が削られてしまう、厄介な問題。
  例外は少ないが、マラケシュのフナ広場の北側の新スークの土産物屋のように、あまりふっかけてこず、一定のところで、「これ以上安くしたら仕入れ値と同じになってマージンがなくなるから、これで折れてよ。」と言ってくるところもあった。
  そのような中で、定価販売のところが2つあった。一つは、エルフードの町外れの化石加工場の併設の売店。加工業者直売店は、だいたい同様ではないか。
  もうひとつは、ワルザザートの近くのアイト・ベンハドゥの川とカスバとの間にある数件の土産物屋のうちの1軒。ここは、外に出してあるものには定価がついている。中にあるものにはほとんど価格表示がないが、品物と大きさによって、値段が決まっている。品物の質は必ずしも高くなかったかもしれないが、他の場所に比べてかなりの割安感があった。そして、何よりも、こちらから聞けば丁寧に説明してくれる一方、お店の人の側から「さあいくら。」と執拗に聞いてくることなどないので、ゆっくり品定めができた。デザインに特徴があるからと、安い品物のほうを勧めるようなこともあった。
  For such tourists who are not interested in negotiations for discounts, bargaining may be bothersome, and sometimes diminishes the time for choosing the right things or the time for sight-seeing.
  There are not so many exceptions. However, at a shop in the new souq in the north of the Djemaa Fna in Marrakech, even the first offer was not so high. After only a few bargaining, they requesting me to that price because they would lose money if they would give any further discount.
  I found two shops selling at fixed prices. One was a workshop-cum-shop of fossil stones in Erfoud. I assume that most workshop-cum-shops sell at fixed prices.
  The other was one of the souvenir shops between Aid Benhaddou and the river in front of it. All the articles in front of the shop had price tags. The articles inside did not have such tags, but they actually had fixed prices in accordance with their sizes, which we could ask to the shop-keeper. The shop-keeper was explains the articles if we asked. Unless we ask, he was just waiting so that we could take time to choose our sourvenirs. Sometimes he recommended cheeper thing because they were better in the designs.
  
• モロッコ国鉄 National Railways of Morocco
  モロッコの国鉄は、かつては、１等、２等、そして３等車にあたるＥクラス（Economique）があったようだが、現在では、少なくとも昼の列車に関しては全て新型の車両になっている。等級区分は、1等と2等だけ。2等車でも完全にエアコンが効き、快適(夜行列車はまだ古い車両のようだった。)。ほとんどは4人ずつ向かい合わせのコンパートメント。コンパートメントには、禁煙のものと喫煙可のものとがあるが、実際には、喫煙可のコンパートメントの人も、通路に出て喫煙しているので、「煙害」はあまりないのではないかと思った。
  始発駅発車時刻は正確だが、到着時刻は10分程度遅れることがよくある。

  In some guidebooks, I found information of the three classes of the first, second and third (Economique). However, so long as at least daytime trains are concerned, all train cars were new, air-conditioned (even for the second class) and had two classes only (first and second). There were smoking and non-smoking compartments. However, I saw smokers smoking in the corridors rather than in compartments, which I assume makes even the smokikng compartments clean.
  The departures from the starting staiton were punctual. However, ten-minute delays were often experienced.

• レンタカー Rent-a-car
  各地に営業所のある外資系のレンタカーの中では、Europecar (http://www.europcar.com/)の「ミニ」クラス(リッター・カー)が一番安いと思われる(他のレンタカー会社には、このクラスがない。)。一部の高級車は別だろうが、エアコンはついていない。各社とも、インターネット上で料金計算ができるので、それを使って料金を確認した上で借りればよい。但し、オフロードもある国のため、新しい車でも、借りた車自体が傷んでいる可能性を考えて、無理な運転はしないほうがよい。また、峠道のガードレールが日本のようには整備されていないなどするため、ちょっとしたわき見などが重大事故につながるので、運転はくれぐれも慎重に。
  レンタカーに使っている車両は、通常は、無鉛のハイオク・ガソリン仕様(super sans plomb)。黙っていると有鉛ガソリンを入れられるおそれがあるので注意。満タン(pleinプラン)にして返すことなど、借り方、返し方は、基本的に日本で借りるのと同じ。
  なお、ドライブインやホテルを含め、まずほとんどのところで「番人guardien」から駐車料を取られる。駐車料は、1回5-10DH、1晩30DHが相場だった。
  The least expensive model was available at the Europecar (http://www.europcar.com/) among those foreign firms that have offices in many places in Morocco because only this firm has "mini" class (cars with one-litter engine). Probabley with the exeption of luxurious cars, cars are not air-conditioned. All the major firms allow calculation of the rates in the Internet.
  Because of the road conditions of the country which are not perfectly paved, we should take into acount the possiblity that the condition of the car we have rented may have been deteriorated in some way. Actually I was not sure whether the car I rented was perfect or not. Therefore we must drive the car carefully.
  Also, we should note that no guardrails or other safety facilities have been provided even on major roads in steep mountains, careful driving is a must.
  The fuel for the rent-a-car is usually lead-free premium gasoline. Uless we specify this, peopel at the fuel station may fill the tank with leaded gasoline.
  At all the parking lots, including at a hotel parking and a parking in front of a roadside restaurant, we must pay a few to the guardian. Usually the fee was DH 5 or 10 for a day time short-period parking and DH 30 for one night.
  
• モロッコのインターネット事情 Internet in Morocco
  モロッコでは、「テレブティック」(公衆電話屋)が多数あることに示されるように、個々の家庭からの電話事情は良くない。その関係で、インターネットも、インターネット・カフェで使うのが普通と言う。そのため、小さな町にもインターネット・カフェがあり、しかも、主要都市では1時間10DH程度と、かなり安い。O/Sは、Windows XP (ProfessionalまたはHome)化が進んでいるが、Windows 98のところもあった。Macは見なかった。言語は、どこでも、フランス語、アラビア語を選択できるようにになっていた。
  There are may "teleboutiques" in Morocco because many individual families do not have their own telephone lines. In the same line, people in this country use the Internet at Internet cafes. Actually there are many Internet cafes in the country, even in small towns. In addition, the fee is quite small, particularly in urban areas, usually DH 10 for one hour. The operating systems were changing to Windows XP (Professional or Personal). But at some Internet cafes, Windows 98 was sitll in use. I never saw a Mac computer. The O/S usually allows the user either French or Arabic.
  
  <マラケシュでのインターネット・カフェ3軒 Three Internet cafes in Marrakech>
  マラケシュのフナ広場近くのBab Agnaou通り沿いで、のぞいたり、自分のモバイル・パソコンを持ち込んで使ったりしたインターネット・カフェ3軒についての報告。3軒とも、1時間10DHだった。なお、他にもたくさんのインターネット・カフェがある。
  I checked three Internet cafes on Bab Agnaou near the Djemaa Fna. At some, I connected by mobile computer. At all the three the fee was DH 10 per hours. There are many other Internet cafes in this area.
  
  (1) Grand Hotel du Taziの斜め向かいのインターネット・カフェ An Internet cafe almost opposite Grand Hotel du Tazi
  親切だったが、データの転送速度が極端に落ちていて、ほとんどがタイムアウトで接続できない状態だった。たまたまその時だけだったのかもしれないし、私のパソコンとの間のソフトやハードの相性の問題があったりしたかもしれないが。
  They were very kind and friendly. However, the data transfer was very slow, often caused "time out" in connection. But I do not know the reason. I might have been there during a speicial problematic period. There is also a possibility of imcompatibility between their system and my hardware.
  
  (2) Bab Agnaou通りとMoulay Ismail通りとを結ぶ狭い通り(Foucauld広場側の角にBMCE)とBani Marine通りとの交差点近くの奥まったところにあるインターネット・カフェ

  親切でかつデータの転送速度も速く、満足できた。
  入り口に「あなたは日本語をつかうことができる。」とプリンターで印刷した紙が入り口に貼ってある。1台のパソコンは日本語を使えるようにしてあるとのことだった。(「使える」とは、書くこともできるとのことかは確認しなかった。)
  I was satisfied with the kindness of the shop-keeper and with the fast data transfer.
  There was a sign that some computers allow the Japanese langugage in front of the shop. According to them, we could use Japanese on one of their computers. However, I did not check whether it means both reading and writing or only reading.
  
  (3)Bab Agnaou通りでフナ広場近くの店(フナ広場に向かって右側) An Internet cafe near the Djemaa Fna on Bab agnaou in the right toward the Djemaa
  店番の人が「自分はパソコンのことはわからない。」とのことだったので、使用を断念した。
  The attendant there said that she did not know anything about computers, I gave up to use the Internet there. But the shop was crowed with European youth.
  
  <インターネット・カフェでの持参ノートパソコンの接続>
  マラケシュでは、中には日本語が使えるとしているインターネットカフェがあったが、自分のモバイル・パソコンを持ち込めば、読み書きともに日本語が確実に使える。メクネス、フェズ、マラケシュの数軒で使った限りにおいては、モロッコのインターネット・カフェでは、持参のノートパソコンを、通常料金で接続させてくれる。IPアドレスが個々のパソコンに割り当てられていたが、サーバーでパソコン名やMACアドレスによる接続制限をしていないようで、店のパソコン1台のネットワーク・ケーブルをはずし、それを持参のノートパソコンに接続するとともに、そのケーブルが接続されていたパソコンのIPアドレスやDNSサーバー・アドレスをノートパソコンに設定すれば接続できまた。「体感速度」は、当時自宅で使っていた10mb/sのケーブルテレビ回線での接続の4分の1から半分近くだった。
  但し、ネットワーク管理者がいるところで、助言を得ながら行ったほうがよいと思う。また、ウィルス、ワーム、ハッカー等の対策を考えると、現在でも同様に接続させてもらえるかどうかはわからない。
  

その他 Others

• 北部では、一部のスラムでさえ、ヨーロッパのフランス語の衛星放送を受信するためのパラボラアンテナが立っていた。そのくらいなので、フランス語は広く通じる。おそらく、英語は、大都市の大きなホテルなどを除いて、通じないと思う。
• マドリードまではアメリカン航空のマイレージの無料券だったが、レンタカーを一人で使ったために、その経費がかなりかかった。しかし、限られた日程であちこち見ようとすると、レンタカーを使わざるを得ないようにも感じる。

• French is widely understood.
• How to reduce the costs for the rent-a-car might be an issue in view that without a car, we canot effectively visit so many places in limited time.
