ポイント

• 母親の従兄が戦時中に兵隊としてスマトラで敗戦を迎えた時、とても良い土地だったので帰りたくなかったと言っていたそうだ。それで、行ってみたいみたいと思っていた。バンコク勤務時、マレーシアのペナン島で乗り換えると安く行けることがわかったので行ってみた。
• スマトラ島の中央にある大きなカルデラ湖であるトバ湖(Lake Toba, Danau Toba)の中にサモシール(Samosir)島がある。そこに1週間滞在した。標高がある上、湖に囲まれているので、とても過ごしやすい気候だった。しかも、宿はだいたい民宿で、かなり安い(当時の感覚 では、1泊700円程度)。元々の建物よりは観光客向けに新たに作ったが多いにしても、それぞれの宿が、伝統的家屋の外観にしていた。民宿ないし地元住民による小規模な旅館が主体で、外資がほとんど入っていないという点では、長野県の乗鞍高原の宿と類似性もある。更に、島の北側に接したスマトラ島本土側のテレ(Tele)には温泉もある(ここは、サモシール島と、小さな橋でつながっている。)。この島の多くの人にとって、宗教はキリスト教だが、それが伝統的なやり方と融合していた。このようにして、特に日本人には、安くリラックスできる土地だった。
• 少なくとも当時は、日本人にはほとんど知られていなかった。中高年のドイツ人バックパッカーなどが多かった。1回だけ会った日本人は、小さな子供を連れた女性だった。
• 出入り口はメダンになる。ここには、ジャカルタからのガルーダ・インドネシア航空よりも、マレーシア航空などの、他国の航空会社のようが安くかつ良い時間帯に入れる可能性があるので、ガルーダにとららわれることなく航空券を探すとよい。
• メダンからのバスは、外観はきれいに塗装してあっても、実際にはかなり古い車両だった。また、メダンに戻るバスの中で現金全てをすられてしまった。賊は集団で働いている。バスの一番後ろの席は、全乗客が前を向いて座っている時、他の乗客から見えないので、賊の一員がそこに座らせる。最後部の席に座ってはならない。また、現金他の貴重品は、すられるような場所に入れてはならない。

• According to my mother, when one of her cousins finished his duty as a soldier in Sumatra, he did not want to come back because it was a very comfortable place. Therefoer I had been interested in visiting the island. When I lived in Bangkok, I found that it was easy and cost effective to go to Sumatra via Penang, Malaysia.
• Samosir Island, which I stayed, is in Lake Toba in almost the center of Sumatra, created by depression of a volcanic area. Because of the altitude and the mass of the lake water, the climate is quite comfortable. The accommodation is provided by local people in their traditional design at very reasonable rates, probably at 6 US dollars or so. In addition, there is a hot spring at Tele, which is on the main island side but is connected by a small bridge with Samosir. Most people of the island adhere to Christianity. But it is amalgated with their traditional ways. As a result, it is a place where we can relax with small costs.
• The entrance to the area is Medan. It is usually more convenient and cost-effective to go there by Malaysian Air Systems or other foreign carriers rather than the national airways of Indonesia, i.e. Garuda.
• The buses from Medan to Lake Toba look new but are usually very old. In addition, regretfully I was a prey of the pick-pockets in the bus returning to Medan. The last seats in a bus is quite dangerous because they are not seen by the other passengers. This is why the theives who work in a group tries the prey to sit there. We must not sit on the rear seats in a bus. We must not keep our valuables in a place where pick-pockets easily identify.

• 当時、バンコクで容易に手に入ったのは、昭文社の「エリアガイド」と「地球の歩き方」だけだった。前者は、ページ数の割りにこの地域の概要をよく紹介していた。後者は、全容がとらえられていないが、細部の情報に役立つものがあった。これらにより、トバ湖への出入りの方法や温泉があること等の情報は得られたが、島での宿の情報は不足していたので、船から見て気に入ったところとした。おそらく、それは妥当だったろう。

• I have no useful publication to recommend because I could find only one Japanese guideboooks, which I found giving not sufficient information especially about accommodation.
