電源開発の調査のために等高線沿いに黒部峡谷の中腹下部に作られた延長16.6 kmの旧「日電歩道」(4年かけて1929年完成)を歩く。岩壁の中腹を削るなどして等高線沿いに作られ、起伏がないことから「水平道」と呼ばれる。(黒部峡谷の電力開発の歴史は関西電力ウェブサイトにもあります。日電(日本電力)については、ウィキペディアに情報があります。)

This is a treck to the 16.6 kilometer long former Nichiden Hodo (Nihon Denryoku, or Nichiden in short, (Japan Power Generation)) Trail which was constructed by the Nichiden for survey for hydropower development in the Kurobe Gorge along a contour line in the lower part of the Kurobe Gorge, completed in 1929 after four years' construction work. Persistetly following the same contour line, the trail was constructed by cutting the rocks on steep cliffs. It is therefore called "horizontal trail" or level trail.

秘湯ブームのため、黒部峡谷鉄道の終点の欅平駅から阿曽原温泉まで往復する人もいるが、山歩きとしては、立山から欅平まで下って行くのが普通である。欅平から立山までの標高差を登ることは、体力的にかなり大変だろう。

標準的な行程では、まず、立山の室堂を朝に出て、立山に登った後に剣御前小屋に行き、剣沢雪渓を下り、雪渓末端の真砂沢との出合いにある真砂沢小屋に1泊目する。(室堂から直接剣御前小屋に登れば、仙人池まで行けるだろう。)

2日目は、真砂沢小屋から剣沢を更に1時間ほど剣沢北股出合まで下った後、剱岳が美しい仙人池に登る。そこから仙人湯を経て漸く黒部峡谷に出て、同峡谷との合流点の阿曽原小屋に泊まる(剣沢は、黒部側に注ぐが、その注ぎ場所は滝になっている十字峡でもあり、仙人池・仙人湯を迂回して、阿曽原で黒部峡谷に出る。)。阿曽原小屋の下の黒部川の河原付近には四角いコンクリート浴槽の温泉の湯船がある。浴槽が一つであるため、夕方に女性専用の時間が設定されていた。

3日目は、阿曽原から旧「日電歩道」を等高線沿いに歩き、黒部峡谷鉄道の欅平駅の上で一気に駅に下って、トロッコ列車に乗って宇奈月に出る。

Due to the enthusiasm about hot springs in very remote places among certain people, there are those who come up to the hot spring at Azohara from Keyakidaira station of the Korobe Gorge Railway these days. However, for treckers, starting from Murodo in the Tateyama areas is the usual way. Walking in the opposite direction requiries tremendous efforts because of the differences in the altitudes.

According to the standard plan, one should start at Murodo in Tateyama early in the morning to climb to the summits of Tateyama, then to walk to the Tsurugi Gozen Refuge, then to descend to Masago-zawa Lodge on Tsurugi-sawa covered by permanent snow. (If one climbs directly to the Tsurugi Gozen Refuge from Murodo, then it should be possible to go on to Sennin-Ike.)

The second day starts with one hour's descent in the Tsurugi-zawa to Futamata, or Tsurugisawa-Kitamata Deai (Confluence of Tsuguri-sawa and Kita-mata), from which an ascent starts to Sennin Ike for a magnificent view of Tsurugi-dake. Then through Sennin-yu hot spring, we at last reach the Kurobe Gorge at Azohara, where we stay for the second night. Near the bottom of the Kurobe Gorge is a square concrete bath to which abundant hot water flows from a tunnel of the Kansai power company. Evening hours were reserved for ladies for the only bath.

The third day is a thrilling long walk on the Nichiden Hodo (Nichiden Trail) along a contour lilne on steep slopes or cliffs in the Gorge. When the trail reaches above the Keyaki-daira station of the Korobe Gorge Railway, a sudden steep descent leads us to the station, from which we take a train to Unazuki which connects Toyama Chiho Tetsudo trains.

必要な体力と技術、装備等 Required techniques

登りは、立山ないし剣御前小屋までと剣沢から仙人池までだけで、それぞれ2時間程度である。そのため、体力的には楽である。

しかし、長く急な剣沢の雪渓を下る。剣沢雪渓の末端から仙人池への登り口まで及び仙人池から仙人湯までは、崩れた雪渓の下に降りたり、崩れかかったスノーブリッジを渡ったりする。そして、旧「日電歩道」は、黒部側の上の切り立った岩壁の中腹に1人分の巾で岩を穿って作った部分がかなりあるなどする。そのため、雪渓を安全に下る技術と判断力、崩れた雪渓をうまく乗り切る判断力と技術、狭く高い岩壁中腹の歩道を怖がらずに安全に通行できる能力が必要である。

旧日電歩道は、巾と岩を穿った部分の高さの両方が限られているので、転落事故防止のため、ザックは、巾が体の巾以内であること、頭より上に出ないこと、また、岩や草木に引っかからないように単純な外形になっていることが重要である。また、途中、雪崩等のために雪渓を渡れない支沢は、沢の下に掘ったトンネルで迂回する箇所があり、それらのトンネルは曲がっているために真っ暗であり、ライトが必要である。沢の下を通るために中は水びたしであり、靴も、雪渓や岩で滑らないことのほかに、防水性のあることが望ましい。

There are only two ascents to Tateyama or Tsurugi Gozen Refuge and to Sennin Ike from Tsurugi-sawa each of which requires approximately two hours. Therefore this treck does not require special physical energy.

However, major parts of the treck involve the following three challenges:

(a) the descent on the long and steep permanent snow in Tsurugi-sawa,

(b) from the end of the Tsurugi-saw permanent snow to Futamata (Tsurugisawa-Kitamata Deai) and from Sennin Ike to Sennin Yu: frequent identification and choices of trails in fallen snow masses, some of which could be used as bridges and others of which are too dangerous to do so according to when we visit, and

(c) the very narrow trails (about half a meter to 80 centimeters) with limited heights above our heads often cut into the rocks in the Kurobe Gorge.

Therefore the treck requires (a) techniques and judgement to safely descend on the icy perment snow, (b) techniques and judgement to safely pass through the gorges with broken ice masses, and (c) the capabilities to safely walk on the 16.6 kilometer trail on the cliffs high in the Kurobe Gorge.

In addition, the backpack must be within the sizes not exceeding the width of your body and the height of your head because of the limited width and heights of the trail in the Kurobe Gorge. Also, the exterior design of the backpack must be simple. Otherwise, the backpack may hit a rock in your left or above you to have you fallen onto the bottom of the Gorge. Also, you must have a torch to walk in a narrow and winding and thus totally dark tunnel under a stream which is not passable over it because of the frequent snow falls. Water-proof shoes are preferable in this tunnel because of the water there.

時期 When you can go

関西電力が中部山岳国立公園の核心部に黒部第四ダムと関連観光施設等を建設する許可を得た際、旧「日電歩道」を維持することが条件に付された。そのため、関西電力が毎年修復した上で供用している。しかし、雪崩等が頻発する場所であるため、その修復にはかなりの時間を要し、その結果、開通するのは、たいてい、9月に入ってからである。

The former Nichiden Trail requires intensive repair work every year because rampant avalanches damage it. As a result, it is usuall only in early September when the repair work is complete to make the trail open to treckers until early or mid-October when snow starts to fall again.
